Chelsea are in “advanced talks” to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton ahead of Manchester City.
City have been tracking Cucurella as a replacement for Oleksandr Zinchenko, who left to join Arsenal this summer.
The Premier League champions have already seen a £30m bid turned down by the Seagulls, who value their versatile left-back at the £50m mark.
That has left the door ajar for Chelsea to pounce, and the Daily Mail reports a deal is being thrashed out.
Cucurella had his heart set on working with Pep Guardiola at the Etihad and it might yet prove a problem for Chelsea, who might need to convince the player, even if they meet Brighton’s valuation.
Chelsea centre-half, Levi Colwill, could also be included in negotiations to sweeten the deal.
