Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, has said that Manchester United will not make it into the Premier League’s top four this season despite their improved form.
Erik ten Hag’s men began the season in dismal fashion, losing their opening two fixtures to Brighton and Brentford.
But the Red Devils responded by putting together a run of four straight wins in the Premier League, including victories over Liverpool and Arsenal.
United did, however, lose their first Europa League group stage match to Real Sociedad in midweek.
Ten Hag reinforced his squad with a number of big-money signings in the summer window, including Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.
But Merson believes United will fail to finish in the Champions League qualification places as they “have a lot of work to do’ regarding their squad.
The Arsenal legend has instead backed Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal to make up the top four, in no particular order.
“It’s still early doors, but I think the Premier League top-four this season will be Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in whatever order,’ Merson told Sportskeeda.
“Chelsea will obviously have a thing or two to say, but we’ll have to wait and see how Potter performs at Stamford Bridge.
“As for Manchester United, I don’t think they’ll make it because they still have a lot of work to do in terms of their squad.
“They’ve won four league games in a row, including victories against Liverpool and Arsenal, but I’m yet to be convinced by them.
Manchester United finished last season on sixth position behind Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City and failed to qualify for the Champions League.
